India and Japan have announced new agreements covering defence cooperation, maritime security, economic investment and artificial intelligence. The agreements were presented after talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Both governments want to strengthen security in the Indo-Pacific and reduce their dependence on vulnerable international supply chains. Although the agreements are not officially directed against any country, China's growing military and economic influence forms an important part of the regional context. India and Japan are also members of the Quad partnership with Australia and the United States.
