Meteorologists are warning that a large and intense heat dome could affect much of the continental United States for at least a week. Temperatures may rise significantly above seasonal averages, with unusually warm nights preventing people and buildings from cooling down. More than 90 local temperature records could be broken, while drought conditions may increase the danger of wildfires. Health officials are advising residents to limit outdoor activity, drink water and check on vulnerable neighbours. Scientists say human-caused climate change has made long-lasting heatwaves more frequent and more intense across many parts of the country.
