Papua New Guinea and Australia have signed a historic mutual defence treaty stating that an armed attack on either country would threaten both nations. The agreement also allows thousands of Papua New Guineans to serve in the Australian Defence Force. China has criticised the treaty as exclusive and potentially directed against Beijing.
